Program Overview

Literacy Green Bay's mission is to help adults and families acquire the reading, writing, math, English language, computer, and workforce skills they need to function effectively as workers and community members.

Literacy Green Bay offers ELL classes, Family Literacy Classes, and Adult Tutoring. We offer ELL Classes in the mornings and evenings four days a week. The Children First Family Literacy program is a GED program in collaboration with NWTC which provides GED instruction as well as early childhood learning, parenting, and PACT time. Students in our Adult Tutoring program work one-on-one with volunteer tutors on goals that are specific to their needs (i.e. improving basic reading skills, speaking better English, studying for GED).

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

My name is Maria and I am from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. I came to Green Bay 26 years ago with my husband who worked here. We have three children and one grandson. As our family grew, I began classroom studies with Literacy Green Bay to improve my English. I also studied with two tutors during the last twelve years.

I decided to take the GED tests because I had studied the English language for many years through Literacy Green Bay in their classroom and with my tutors, and I wanted to work on a bigger goal. I earned a secretarial diploma in Mexico and began working in my father's business instead of finishing my high school classes. I did not finish high school in Mexico. I wanted to earn my high school diploma now that I had become more proficient in the English language.

I liked that I was able to take the GED exams at my own pace. I also enjoyed re-learning things that I remember learning when I was younger and enjoyed learning new things about the history and government of the United States. I was able to feel challenged with the test material and felt proud when I passed an exam.
