Program Overview
Literate Adults with Down Syndrome is a free adult literacy program offered at GiGi's Playhouse Indianapolis. The program is designed for adults with Down syndrome who want to improve their reading, writing, and communication skills. Participants work on reading words and sentences, understanding everyday information, and building confidence using written language in daily life.
Classes are held in a supportive, small group setting led by trained staff and volunteers. Lessons use hands on activities, visual supports, and repetition to help learners succeed at their own pace. Instruction focuses on real life skills such as reading signs, schedules, forms, and simple written instructions.

Before joining literacy programming at GiGi's Playhouse Indianapolis, one adult participant struggled to read simple signs and written instructions, which often made daily tasks frustrating and stressful. Through consistent small group instruction and encouragement, they began recognizing common words and confidently reading short sentences. Today, they proudly read schedules aloud, follow written directions during activities, and ask to practice reading at home. Their confidence has grown alongside their skills, and their family shared that they now feel more independent and excited to learn.
