Program Overview

Literacy Council of Tyler has been serving adults since 1990. We offer all the above services via classroom settings, distance learning, small group settings and individual tutoring. We are an award winning year round program. The most recent addition to our services is Career Pathways. In Career Pathways, an adult student may study to complete high school while also studying for a state certification is such fields as Basic Nurse Aide, Medical Assistant, Dental Assistant, Phlebotomy, Automotive Technician, Welder, and Power Plant Manager. These courses are also available to eligible English as a second language students. We are continuously adding Career Pathway courses and all these services (including the state credentialed workforce training) is offered at no cost to the student.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

From GED graduate manager of Dairy Queen, Crystal Wilabay: "It is not our circumstances that define us. What makes us who we are is how we handle our circumstances."

From former ESL student and GED graduate, Ivonne Pilar: "Once your are through that door it empowers you that you are doing something to change your life."

From GED graduate and successful college student, Jarvin Dorsey: "I knew I was better than just sitting at the house. I had to learn to depend on myself."

From GED graduate and college professor, Dr. Tammy Burnette: "It changed my life forever. I cannot even remember how I used to think."

Leticia started in our family literacy program four years ago with her three year old, Cesar Jr. At that time Leticia spoke almost no English. When Leticia saw how well Cesar Jr. was doing, she put her baby girl's name on the waiting list as soon as she
discovered she was pregnant. Cesar Jr. went on to school and is now in the second grade and doing very well. The new baby is now 1.5 years old and is showing significant gains. Leticia now speaks English well and has recently enrolled in GED classes. Furthermore, the father (Cesar Sr.) was impressed with the program, enrolled in GED classes and now has his GED. Cesar Sr. is now in LCOT's college prep class and will enter Tyler Jr. College in the fall. Leticia's 17 year old daughter was not succeeding at her charter school, so the parents put her in LCOT's GED and Career Pathways program where she became state certified as a Basic Nurse Aide and is continuing GED classes. The 17 year old also volunteers during PACT time which is one of the reasons we can keep PACT time going. This is such a good example of how literacy is a family affair.
