Program Overview

LCN provides instruction via one-on-one tutoring, small groups or classroom settings for adults needing help with reading, writing, math, GED preparation or English as a Second Language (ESL). Services are provided at little or no cost to students. LCN offers services to all Montgomery County adult residents, most of whom live in the Norristown area and are moderate to low-income.

Mission Statement

Empower adults to improve literacy skills or learn English as a foreign language. Trained volunteers and teachers provide
tutoring and classes to adult learners at little or no cost. We collaborate with multiple local organizations to deliver such services. We provide this service without regard to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Hours of operation: 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM

Cost info: A modest registration fee of $50 is applicable to ESL class students.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Jenny had a job as a massage therapist at a store in the mall. In order to improve her English language skills, she contacted LCN for help. She was assigned a tutor who has been working with her since 2013. As her English improved and she gained confidence, Jenny opened her own business and in just a few short years that business grew from a one-person operation to one with two full-time employees. The business continues to grow with very favorable reviews. In 2016, Jenny started preparing for the citizenship test, which she passed with flying colors. In February 2017 Jenny was sworn in as a naturalized citizen. Currently, Jenny has started working towards her goal to become an acupuncturist, taking classes conducted in English.

Program’s Demographics/Metrics

Each year LCN provides services to over 275 students, most of whom are low-income with low literacy skills or low English language skills. While LCN serves all residents of Montgomery County, most students live and/or work in Norristown and the surrounding communities. Upon registration, all students are administered a pretest. After approximately 50 hours of instruction or at the end of a semester, students are post-tested to determine progress. LCN has served thousands of students since its inception in 1984.
