Program Overview

The Literacy Council of Kingsport offers free one-to-one tutoring for adults and qualified children who want to improve their literacy skills as well as achieve their individual goals. A trained volunteer tutor is matched with each student at a location and time that meets the needs and schedules of the student and tutor.

Adult Basic Literacy Program - This program provides specialized, one-on-one tutoring instruction by trained volunteers for adults, who read at or below a fifth grade level. It utilizes a phonics-based reading program, Laubach Way to Reading, to help students develop basic reading and writing
skills at his or her own pace. Volunteers also work with students on achieving their individual goals like improving employability skills, enrolling in an adult or higher education program, engaging in their child's education, and volunteering in the community.
