Program Overview

Our Adult Basic Literacy program helps adult learners to improve basic reading, writing, math, and critical thinking skills that support educational, career and personal goals. Basic literacy and GED prep classes are available in English and Spanish.

English Language Acquisition for Adults supports immigrants and refugees in learning English so they can develop the skills and confidence to fully participate in, and contribute to, our community.

GED prep and English language classes are currently offered in person at sites around Tucson, as well as online via Zoom. Computer basics classes are only available in person. Basic literacy tutoring is provided 1:1 at a place and time convenient to both the student and tutor. See our website for schedules and details at https://literacyconnects.org/adult-programs/

"I'm amazed at how much more I am able to do. When I see myself reading a driver's manual, I think, 'Really, is this me?'" -- Adult Basic Literacy student

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Neamat, a literacy student originally from Iraq, has worked with reading and writing tutors since 2021. His reading has improved every year, and he now reads texts 10 levels higher than when he started. As his confidence grew, he took math and computer literacy classes.

With lots of encouragement from his tutors, Neamat decided that he wanted to write a newsletter. He lives alone and does not always have people to talk to, so he wrote to share his stories with more people. He enjoyed sharing this so much that he is already working on the next issue.

Out of gratitude, Neamat started a tradition of bringing cake to Literacy Connects for everyone to enjoy once a month. He sits around the table with staff as he excitedly shares the books he is currently reading. He is proud of the progress he has made and says that when he came to Literacy Connects “my head was empty.”
