Program Overview

All Literacy Advance classes are free.

To come to class, you must: Be 18 or older; not be on probation for a violent crime; have a Houston address, and not be a visitor or tourist.

We have 2 main programs.

1. Basic Reading and Writing:

If you already speak English, but want to improve your reading and writing, you will join our Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes. These are classes in basic reading and writing. Each class has just one student. Each student meets with their own tutor.

2. English Speaking and Listening:

If you want to speak and understand English better, you will come to our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. These are classes in speaking and listening to English, with some reading and writing. Each class has 5 - 10 students with a tutor.

All our classes are for basic learning. We do not have GED, and we do not have advanced classes. When you are ready, we will help you with your next step through our Transition Program.

You must come to Student Registration before you can start classes. Student Registration is held regularly at the main campus in West Houston (713.266.8777), at the Bay Area campus in Clear Lake (281.282.6032), and in Brookshire (281.822.4215).

After you finish Student Registration, you will be on our waitlist. We have Waiting Classes and Special Classes that you can begin immediately.
We will call you when we have a Regular class for you.
