Program Overview

The goal of CASA's Life Skills ESOL Program is to improve participants' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English so that they may become more financially independent, increase their employability, better integrate into U.S. society, and achieve their personal goals. Classes provide adult learners with the skills to apply English accurately and appropriately in a variety of places including but not limited to home, community and workplace settings. Lessons focus on concrete and practical everyday experiences and promote both civic engagement and community empowerment. Four eight-week sessions are held each year from late August to early June. Learners can select from virtual and in-person instruction with classes available on weekday evenings, weekday mornings, and Saturdays.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Doris moved to the United States from Cameroon approximately one year ago. In Cameroon Doris did not have the opportunity to work. Instead, she studied and learned some English, but it was British English and there was very little practice speaking. Doris says, “Here people speak very fast, and I think people abbreviate a lot so it is hard to pay attention and follow the conversation." After four months getting settled in her new home, Doris enrolled in CASA's ESOL classes. She says, “At first I couldn't apply to get a job by myself. I didn't know how to do it, but through CASA now I know how and can speak English and express myself." In class, Doris also learned how to take the bus and communicate with healthcare workers. She now has access to internet, which she uses to research resources and services in the area. Her long-term goal is to enroll in IT classes at the community college.
