Program Overview

LENA Start is a parent group model, which is turnkey and leverages: the LENA system to capture words and back and forth between the child and caregiver, feedback in the form of easy to read and actionable reports and content delivered weekly to a group of parents. The curriculum adapts hard science into accessible and easy to implement concepts.

Serves groups of parents who have children aged birth to 30 months, up to 20 families per group. The group setting allows for families to build connections with each other and the broader community, all while receiving personalized feedback and support.

• Easy to implement with everything you need
included: software, hardware, curriculum, materials,
training, and support.
• Pre-program trainings on implementing and
leading the program and ongoing support
throughout guide you every step of the way.
• Full content for up to 16 sessions, deliverable in
Spanish and English.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to accelerate language development to improve the cognitive, social, and emotional health of children birth to five and close achievement gaps.

LENA is based on the belief that all parents have the ability to unlock their children's social, emotional, and cognitive potential. We focus on increasing interactive talk because it has been proven to be a key factor in early brain development – and we focus on the earliest years because research points to those as the most critical. The feedback we provide helps parents improve talk and conversations with their children. The results are stronger families and children more prepared to succeed in school.

Hours of operation: 8-5

Cost info: Host sites typically cover the cost per family to participate which includes software, hardware, parent kit, curriculum, training and ongoing support and materials.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

We have hundreds of success stories from a mom in Alabama who recently shared that LENA Start gave her hope and helped her know she was a good mother to a young teen mother who first participated in our program and now is trained as a facilitator in our program.

Each family has their own success story and their own moments both in class as well as at home.

Program’s Demographics/Metrics

We have had 244 families complete the program across 4 national sites since mid-2015. This fall (2016) we will work with more than 200 families in site sites nationally. On average, we have a 82% graduation rate and our families more than double the amount of time reading together, their child typically doubles their language development in as little as 2 months and our families show statistically significant gains in number of words per day as well as number of conversational interactions between the child and adult care giver.
