Program Overview

Our English Language + Literacy program (EL+LP) provides English language learners, immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers and native-born English speakers with limited literacy the chance to thrive by offering free one-on-one tutoring and group conversation classes. Formerly known as Literacy Volunteers of Greater Portland, EL+LP serves adults 18 and over from countries all over the world, all looking to improve their English language and/or literacy skills.

The one-on-one English tutoring program offers:

• FREE weekly sessions* to improve speaking, literacy skills, reading, writing, and/or test prep based on the student's level and stated goals
• Individualized lessons from trained volunteers
• A tailored schedule to fit the student's and tutor's availability

*COVID-19 update: currently offering virtual tutoring lessons through online video meeting platforms

• FREE English conversation classes* at multiple times of day
• Opportunities to develop oral fluency in a safe and welcoming environment
• Experienced teachers who provide lessons in conversation, vocabulary, and grammar
• Focus on practical life-skills topics
