Program Overview

The Tennessee Schools for the Deaf are public schools providing children, birth to 21, identified with hearing concerns / Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deaf Blind, or Deaf Plus a free and appropriate education using a bimodal approach: English and American Sign Language (ASL). The Language & Literacy Services are an Outreach program comprised of high qualified, certified Parent Advisors and Deaf Mentors to teach families ASL and English so they can be their deaf / hard of hearing child's first teacher in language and literacy development.
