La Esperanza Opciones and Education Program

Program Overview

The education programs are provided to all clients located in Sussex County, Delaware and surrounding areas. The programs include 1:1 GED Prep provided in Spanish, English as a Second Language classes for newcomers, Spanish Literacy, Digital Literacy and Financial Literacy classes.

Jesús walked through our doors looking for support to start a new career. In our Opciones Program, he received one-on-one help to create a resume, write a cover letter, and begin searching for jobs. But he quickly realized that the kind of job he truly wanted required a high school diploma — something he didn't have. He made a choice: to start again, from the beginning.

“I had heard about classes before," he says, “but I never followed through. This time, I did. I want to have a diploma. I want to move forward."

Jesús began by enrolling in ESL classes to strengthen his English. Now, he's studying for his GED. He attends class regularly, does his homework, and brings the same determination to learning that he brought to his recovery. “I love math," he says proudly. “When I was in school, I always got A's in math. Maybe I'll get one again."

When asked what he would tell others who feel stuck or afraid to start over, Jesús doesn't hesitate: “You can always begin again. Go to class. Try. It brings hope. And hope brings peace."
