Program Overview

Our school is located in rural area that is located on the Navajo Nation,
which is in the state of Arizona. Our program is entitled the Family And Children's
Education (FACE) Program that is funded by the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE)
FACE was initiated in 1990, and
currently has programs in 44 Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) funded schools.
It was designed as a family literacy program, an integrated model for an early
childhood/parental involvement program for American Indian families in
BIE-funded schools.

Evaluation indicates that FACE
programs are succeeding in addressing achievement gaps for American Indian
children primarily located on rural reservations, and in better preparing them
for school. Our school Kin Dah Lichi'i Olta' is fortunate to have a program
within their community because we are able to increase family literacy; to
strengthen family-school-community connections; to promote the early
identification and services to children with special needs; to increase parent
participation in their child's learning; to support and celebrate the unique
cultural and linguistic diversity of each American Indian community served by
the program; and to promote lifelong learning. Program services integrate
language and culture in two settings: home and school.

Our school would like to use the
monies to promote more literacy development within the community because we do
not have a local library we could purchase a variety of literature for the
families to use for at home reading or within the classroom. The local library within
our community is about 55 miles away and this causes families to not have the
ventures of reading a book with their child, they are missing today and tomorrow's
stories. We would like to use the money to fulfill the literacy-motivated wishes
for the child and parents or families because literacy development is the key
to inspire young minds to further themselves in life.

We greatly appreciate any assistant
for our need of literature as we strive to embed our young learners to value
the importance of reading a book. In addition, to know and understand why
literacy is the foundation to learning and the growth within their development.
Families need the support and knowledge so by having a variety of literature
for their usage will give them the advantage to read about the outside world or
find their favorite author, seek a new adventure, or even know what a lion in
Africa looks like as our Navajo children only have been exposed to sheep. So
any funding provided will be used directly towards the promotion of literacy enrichment
and development. Again thank you for your time and consideration as we look
forward to hearing from your organization.
