Program Overview

Kids Kraft engages children and their families through a story read aloud, a brief discussion before and after to enhance comprehension, and a related craft activity. Participants are encouraged to visit museum exhibits following the program. Children hear a book read aloud and parents see that modeled. By giving children a free book at the end of the program, parents can continue to read aloud at home, which is often a challenge for low-income families. NCES states that "nearly two-thirds of low-income families do not own any books for their children." RIF states "…providing access is the first and most important step in encouraging literacy development." The program is offered free in part to engage low-income families, support early childhood literacy and make the museum accessible. This program serves over 100 children with wide diversity. A common remark from attendees is they are grateful to have a free, recurring program to for their family.
