Program Overview

The Kenosha Literacy Council provides classes for adults who are learning to read, write, and speak in English and learners who are English speakers but want to improve their reading, writing, and math skills.

Drop-in Tutoring: Tutoring is held at the Council four days a week. Students are matched with tutors and work on individualized education plans.

One-on-One Tutoring: A volunteer tutor is paired with a student and works with them weekly, at the library or another public place.

Small Group Classes: Led by trained volunteer tutors, these classes give students the opportunity to practice English conversation and vocabulary.

ELL Civics Class: Experiential learning methods are used to explore important topics like public schools & libraries, health, finance, safety, housing and government.

Literacy @ Work: Students use computers to learn about online job searches, applications, and how to create resumes.

Citizenship Class: This class prepares learners for the naturalization test and interview.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

"Thank you to the Kenosha Literacy Council for changing my life! Before I learned English I could not understand people. Now, I am not afraid to speak with people when I go to the store, the doctor, or my children's schools. Now, I am more independent. Now my family owns our first home. If I did not take the class at the Kenosha Literacy Council, I would not have known how to buy my new home or how to open a savings account so I can save for the future. Now I am so happy." ~KLC Learner Virginia
