Program Overview

One in five adults in Kanawha County, WV is considered to be functionally illiterate. Since our founding in 1981, Literacy Volunteers of Kanawha County has had one mission: to bring that number to zero. We provide free, confidential tutoring to adults and children in Kanawha County to improve literacy skills. Whether it is learning how to read medication labels, how to sign ones own name, or to speak English for the first time, our dedicated tutors can help.

Tutors are needed as we try to reach more students throughout the Kanawha Valley. They are provided with training and materials, and can chose to work with adults or children. Our tutors provide an invaluable service to the community, and come from all walks of life.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

"I feel the people here are part of my family. I can express my feelings...This helps me to relax. I lost my friends in Syria and here I have found new friends with whom I can discuss my difficulties and my family" -A student from Syria

"(I wanted to learn to read) so I could tell mommy when I got to Heaven that I finally did it." - A former student

"I have worked with people from 10 different countries and each has given me an understanding and appreciation of the cultures they represent and the lives they have lived." - A tutor of 15 years

"Each student has enriched my life. That's a pretty good reward for being a tutor!" -A current tutor
