Program Overview

For 18 years, Reading and Beyond has provided innovative, research based and effective learning solutions for primary education that meets the needs of individual students. Our afterschool programs create engaging and interactive learning actives for children at 3 elementary schools, 5 community sites, and 4 rural sites. The Grade Level Reading program serves over 500 children and employs almost 50 staff members. We employ well-trained teams of literacy tutors that are knowledgeable about current research on effective reading strategies. These tutors assist students in a small-group setting to complete their homework and improve their reading level. We assess our students every 3 months with the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) to guide the tutors on the individual needs of the students. We also evaluate our program on a regular basis and make changes to ensure timely progress.

While the majority of our time with the student is focused on literacy, we also provide homework help, physical activity, and creative activities.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

"My son Alex is very smart but he always had a hard time keeping up with the rest of the class when they were reading. I felt like I needed to get him some tutoring but I couldn't find anything that wasn't way out of our budget. I'm so lucky one of my friends told me about Reading and Beyond and their Grade Level Reading Program. Alex has raised he reading level by one grade and he has only been in the program for 6 months!"
