Program Overview

Finance! Family! Food! is a pilot 7-week family financial education series. At-risk 6th-8th grade students will be taught JA's Economics for Success curriculum in an after school setting. Each week the course will be presented by a trained JA volunteer. Simultaneously, their parents will be taught a series of financial education courses through the Society for Financial Awareness (SOFA). An expert in each week's subject matter will teach the SOFA series to the parents. Each session will culminate in a healthy dinner and opportunity to further discuss the days' lessons. This program will fundamentally change the way the students look at themselves and the world in which they live. It will inspire in them a sense of optimism and self-reliance, especially on matters of money. It will make them fluent in the language of business and free enterprise. The curriculum explores personal finance and students' education and career options based on their skills, interests, and values; it also demonstrates the economic benefits of staying in school. Their parents will experience these same changes, inspirations and fluency, alongside their children, through a series of presentations. The hope is to provide all with a renewed outlook for a better future. Interested participants should have their school contact our office to begin the process of setting up the program. The school needs to provide a meeting location and a minimum of 20 students plus parents.
