Program Overview
ISDA provides a GED and Life Skills program for out-of-school youth in the Ajo area which includes the western villages of the Tohono O'odham Nation. The program's excellent instructor orchestrates a series of group learning exercises in all GED subjects, works one-on-one with students to set goals and assess progress, and manages individual self-paced computer learning. Currently there is no way to take the tests in Ajo. ISDA works with Tohono O'odham Community College to accommodate our students at their test site in Sells, AZ, about an hour and a half from Ajo. There are no other GED programs available to out-of-school students in the Ajo region, so the ISDA program is truly a life-line for these young people. ISDA also holds regular evening classes and encourages older people to attend these, to best serve families and individuals, the whole community. The day program for younger students includes important field trips to visit colleges in Tucson and Phoenix and cultural institutions, all of which are completely new experiences for our program participants.
