Program Overview
IHELP provides one-on-one English language and systems-navigation skills for immigrant and refugee adults in the Greater St. Louis Area that lack access to traditional group classes and other educational opportunities due to transportation, job schedules, child care, medical or trauma issues. Classes are provided virtually or in the home of students. Program participation reduces isolation for students, promotes cross-cultural understanding, and provides an opportunity to build equity in our community. Volunteer teachers provide one-on-one instruction that includes speaking, reading, and writing English weekly in two 1-hour sessions. Their work is focused on achieving the student's personal goals that may include employment, citizenship, or basic communication skills. Volunteers receive complete lesson plans, books, workbooks, supplies, evaluation tools, and ongoing staff support.
