Program Overview
New Legacy Charter School (NLCS) is the only high school that is focused exclusively on serving teen parents and their children on the east side of the Denver metro area, and it is the only one serving teen fathers. Now in its third year, the organization was founded due to the disparity of higher teen pregnancy levels in Aurora, and an obvious lack of services in that area. The high school curriculum is both rigorous and flexible, and it prepares students for continuing education (2- or 4-year college) by working toward college readiness. Language arts and social studies are combined into theme-based humanities courses; math is taught using common core-aligned resources; and science is taught in nine-week modules that focus on inquiry and the scientific process. Other required aspects of the program include health, parenting and child development, and art. Technology, reading and writing are integrated across all subjects.
Student and Volunteer Success Stories
Julissa came to New Legacy near the beginning of her junior year when she was pregnant and feeling socially isolated from her peers at her large traditional high school. Julissa had her daughter Izzabella in January of that year; she took 6 weeks off following childbirth and then she and Izzabella began coming to school together in March of 2016. In the fall of 2017, through the college access program, Julissa applied and was accepted to Metro State University. The school supported her in applying for scholarships and financial aid, which allowed her to start college in the fall of 2017 following her graduation that spring. In the spring of 2017, prior to graduation, Julissa participated in the school's internship program, which also gave her an opportunity to learn more about a career field of interest – nursing. This experience affirmed her interest in nursing and Julissa said this about her internship, "During my internship at Inner City Health Center, I learned many skills from interacting with people, including communication and translation. It was an amazing experience! I was able to do a lot of hands-on work, which I loved. I attended my internship every Wednesday and only met with pregnant patients. I was able to take their vitals and help out with tests needed during normal pregnancies such as the glucose test. It was an amazing opportunity which I would definitely take on again!" The internship program combined with the college access program really gave Julissa a vision for her future and motivated her to continue her education. She is currently in her spring semester at Metro State University of Denver, her daughter Izzabella still attends New Legacy's Early Learning Center, and she is working to gain entry to Metro's nursing program.
