Head Start Smart

Program Overview

Head Start Smart is a service learning project for families enrolled in the Council's early childhood education programs.

In Head Start Smart, parents and children will have the opportunity to act as collaborators, team facilitators, authors, editors, illustrators, photographers, designers, and marketers. During project work sessions, parents will spend time cultivating their children's literacy skills and fostering interest in reading. Head Start family development staff will work directly with parents to enhance their understanding of their children's
developmental and social-emotional milestones in relation to the ongoing project. Through their participation, parents will also gain skills relevant to workforce readiness such as effective communication, task planning and coordination, advanced computer skills, writing, and public speaking.
