Program Overview
When adults learn to read and write, it changes their lives.
For more than 30 years, Strong City Baltimore's Adult Learning Center has provided classes in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English Language Acquisition (ELA), as well as citizenship preparation to Baltimore residents, all at no cost. We are one of three adult education providers in the city of basic skills training in ABE (reading, writing, and math) and ELA.
Adults with language and math skills are more employable, more civically engaged, and more involved with their children's education.
The ALC registers 600 adults every year– both native-born and immigrants – from every corner of Baltimore who work to realize their potential as productive citizens. In a city where close to 100,000 adults do not have a high school diploma, and still more lack the basic literacy skills to succeed in life and work, the ALC is filling an urgent need.
The Adult Learning Center offers programs in these areas:
Adult Basic Education – instruction for individuals without a high-school diploma, those in need of basic skills training in reading, writing, and math.
GED - instruction for individuals without a high school diploma with goals of taking and passing the GED test to obtain their high school diploma. We also offer a GED class in Spanish.
English Language Acquisition (ELA) – English language instruction for non-native speakers.
Other class sites are available. Interested individuals should call us at (410) 261-3524 for more information.
