Program Overview

Goodwill Industries of Northwest Texas (GINWT) supports our communities by providing opportunities for sustainable employment and career enhancement through its Career Resource Centers (CRC) in Lubbock and Amarillo, Texas. CRC services include computer classes, resume writing and one-to-one job search assistance, job interview training, and career and soft skills seminars. CRC staff work with participants to identify employment barriers, implement solutions to overcome them, and assist participants with referrals to local area partner agencies to meet basic needs without duplication of services. The CRC provides access and opportunity to increase job skills and improve digital literacy, creating more economic independence and higher wages for participants.

GINWT accepts gently used donated clothing, furniture, housewares, and other items and sells the items to help fund its job training and computer skills training through the CRC.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Marlyn Herrera came to the Career Resource Center (CRC) to inquire about services. At the time, she was experiencing long-term unemployment. She mentioned that she had been the primary caretaker for her uncle (now deceased). Marlyn was a single mom and was looking for a change from the type of work she was used to doing, but she did not have the computer skills most employers required for an office position.

Marlyn met with a CRC Case Manager to discuss her ambition to pursue a career in a more stationary role that was not as physically demanding. She had a strong background in warehouse production and logistics. Marlyn first appeared shy and quiet. She expressed interest in the Computer Classes offered at Goodwill. She wanted to improve her computer skills to pursue her career goals.

Marlyn enrolled in the intermediate computer class and soon after classes began, she again met with the CRC Career Coach. Together they set a long-term goal to utilize her computer and Employment Development training to pursue an administrative job in an office. Marlyn worked with the Career Coach to create a resume and perform job searches. She successfully completed practice interviews with the Career Coach.

While taking classes, Marlyn developed skills she needed to reach her goals. She took advantage of the resources at the Lubbock CRC. She attended specialty training classes and made use of the computer bank as needed. Marlyn learned MS Word and MS Excel from computer classes in which she was enrolled. She improved her keyboarding skills and increased her keyboarding speed. Marlyn successfully completed both Intermediate and Advance computer classes, earning a SPC certificate in each. Marlyn continued to focus on her strengths and her self-confidence improved.

Marlyn worked diligently to overcome challenges. Although English is her second language, Marlyn did not let that discourage her. Through hard work and determination, she overcame every barrier and obstacle that she encountered.

With the knowledge and skills Marlyn acquired from computer classes at Goodwill, she was confident in applying for office jobs. Utilizing the training and skills she received from her Career Coach, she successfully obtained employment and began her career with Goodwill as a part-time receptionist. Marlyn worked diligently to learn front desk duties. She was receptive to training and had the strong ability to take in and follow directions. Marlyn was able to grasp new concepts quickly. Following her part-time employment with Goodwill, Marlyn was promoted to full-time receptionist. Marlyn's desire to expand her skills landed her a promotion to Accounting in January 2024! Goodwill CRC is rooting for her! We are so proud of her accomplishments! Marlyn has come out of her shell and is thriving in everything she sets her mind to doing! Way to go Marlyn! You never gave up!

MARLYN BELIEVES IN THE MISSION BECAUSE SHE SAYS THAT SHE HAS LIVED IT!
