Program Overview

The Gila County Adult Education Program is funded by the Arizona Department of Education and sponsored by the Gila County Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Roy Sandoval. The program offers GED® test preparation classes, English as a Second Language, College and Career Planning, and Distance Learning (via virtual platforms). All classes are taught by certified Adult Education teachers and are free of charge!

  • Anyone 16 years and older who is not currently enrolled in a high school is eligible, including those who are/were homeschooled.
  • A parental consent form is required for those students under 18.
  • The GED test may be administered to children aged 16 & 17 with parental/custodial consent, along with a copy of the student withdrawal form obtained from the last attended high school.
  • We require that students participate in classes and/or online work for a minimum of 4 hours per week to make reasonable progress.
  • Students must pass all five GED® tests: Civics, Language Arts/Reading, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics.
  • Students are required to take regular state progress tests, which we monitor.
  • For Distance Learning students, initial assessments must be completed before beginning classes with our Distance Learning teacher. Students will need internet access (either home or library), a personal email address (not work), a personal cell phone with texting function (not a relative), and a computer or laptop is strongly recommended.

Currently, there are three approved pathways for students to obtain their High School Equivalency Diploma (GED):
  • GED® testing pathway – Students attend classes at one of our centers or by distance learning in preparation for the GED® exams. The student then takes the GED® exams at one of our approved Pearson VUE test centers (Globe and Payson).
  • College Credit Pathway – Students can complete 25 credit hours to earn a High School Equivalency Diploma.
Courses must be taken at a state university or state community college or be accepted by one via transfer. Classes must be at the 100 level or above, earn a passing grade of C or above, and courses must appear on an official transcript.
  • HSE Career Readiness Pathway – a hybrid of the first two pathways. Students can earn points from various educational and career training, such as GED® subtests, college courses, and work experience. Students must be enrolled in the Adult Education Program, have completed initial assessments, and have completed the first 12 hours of attendance in the program.

Cost Info

Participants' testing fees with GED.com total $164 for the four main components of the high school equivalency diploma. We have scholarships available to help defray the cost of testing for students in good standing in the program.
