GiGi's Playhouse New Orleans 1-on-1 Literacy Tutoring

Program Overview

GiGi's Playhouse New Orleans offers FREE 1-on-1 literacy and math tutoring specifically designed to meet the universal challenges of individuals with Down syndrome, but is also FREE and available for anyone in the community who could benefit. Each session is customized to the participant's interest and level and runs approximately 1 hour for each 10-week session. Registration is required prior to the beginning of the session.

At GiGi's Playhouse New Orleans, we celebrate “Best of All" moments — those small yet meaningful breakthroughs that remind us why purposeful programming matters. Recently, one of those moments came during a Literacy tutoring session with Lauren.

Lauren is full of personality. She's an artist, a singer, a game show aficionado, and a true movie buff. She can recall birthdays with uncanny accuracy, recognize actors by their voices alone, and keep track of where you last left your phone! But one area that's been more challenging for her is reading comprehension — particularly answering those tricky what, when, where, and how questions after reading a story.

That's why her latest achievement is so exciting. During a scavenger hunt-style tutoring activity, Lauren was asked to identify characters and settings in a story — a fun way to practice comprehension. And she nailed it!

Seeing her apply her love of stories and sharp memory in this new way was a true “Best of All" moment. It's what GiGi's Playhouse is all about — meeting participants where they are and celebrating every step forward.
