Program Overview
Gemma Open Door for Literacy provides compelling, original books and eBooks for adults and young adults who struggle to read. Emerging readers are folks who never learned to read, people for whom English is not their first language, or reluctant readers. Little exists for adults and young adults improving their literacy skills beyond children's books. Gemma gives them a place to start. Carefully constructed texts are built around grown-up themes by bestselling authors (such as Maeve Binchy, Roddy Doyle, Kyoko Mori) and important new voices (Marta Maretich, David L. Ulin, Charles Coe, and many more). Each book is 10,000 words or less. With wide spacing and vocabulary-building text, these books range between 2 and 6 on common reading levels. Short sentences and frequent chapter breaks encourage a sense of accomplishment, early and often. Every author creates a recognizable narrative line, teaching the power of storytelling. Those who can learn to tell their own story can be heard.
