Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Amanda was a GED student. She worked at Good Will in Mabank. They have a rule that a worker must obtain a GED within a year or be terminated. She came to the first GED class in Aug. of 2017.

She lived with her three young children in a trailer with no way to cook or heat food due to the bad, worn out electrical wiring. A neighbor of mine donated a microwave to her family and they were so thrilled to receive it.

Amanda's sixth grader came to the GED class and asked if she could attend class in order to help her mom achieve her goal. She asked if we would make sure that her mom would get her GED. So she came to some of the classes to encourage her mom.

Amanda would get discouraged and would want to walk out, but we continued to encourage and help her with the difficult parts in class. If she would not show up for class, we would call her and she would come.

She graduated with her GED in May of 2019 and walked across the stage in cap and gown at TVCC. She thanked our team for never giving up on her and for the confidence we instilled in her. She is now enrolled at TVCC and working on becoming a nurse.

*She graduated a year after she completed her GED testing because she had to apply for graduation by a certain deadline and she missed that date. TVCC let her graduate with the GED students a year later. I just saw her a few months ago at Wal Mart; she is still going to TVCC.
