Program Overview
Financial literacy is important because it equips us with the knowledge and skills we need to manage money effectively. Without it, our financial decisions and the actions we take, or don't take, lack a solid foundation for success. There are several reasons why poverty and poor money habits are transferred through generations, and the absence of healthy money management skills, inadequate access to wealth generating channels, an unbalanced debt-to-income ratio, unrealistic hurdles to self-sufficiency, racial inequality and a lack of financial literacy all serve to perpetuate the cycle of poverty in the black community. The GCP literacy program is designed to educate and engage African American adult and youth about the myths of financial institutions and the mistrust perpetuated from generations, and provide real life activities that allow participants to experience the reward of making good financial decisions. We educate on concepts such as debt-to-income ratio and through real life challenges we give participants the opportunity to make decisions and evaluate the outcome in a collective group discussion.
