Program Overview
Participants with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) learn functional literacy skills as they participate in the immersive day program. Functional literacy is reading and communication skills necessary to actively function in the daily tasks i.e. reading name tags, which targets name recognition and thereby improves social skills' or reading emergency and street signs for safety; reading recipes to cook simple, healthy meals; reading nutrition labels and making healthy decisions; reading directions and checklists on worksites. Participants come to Friends Life Community at different reading and comprehension levels. Therefore, FLC staff members adapt all curricula to meet participants at their level of understanding and increase each participant's skill level to improve functional independence. FLC teaches literacy in a way that can be generalized outside of the program, e.g. social situations, employment, in the home, and the community.
