Program Overview

AFP provides comprehensive assessment and intervention services to low-income fathers and works one-on-one with fathers to help them develop a systematic approach to gaining employment that includes basic education and strengthening employability skills. The goal is to improve participants' economic mobility through the provision of job readiness, education, and employment services. The 24-week curriculum includes responsible fatherhood, effective communication, job readiness, understanding child support and the legal system, financial management, parenting, healthy relationships, men's health, and referrals for other services as needed. A variety of tools are used to assess work readiness, identify needs, and align services and activities. Job readiness and employment include an intensive one-week 20-hour Employability Boot Camp targeted to unemployed participants, as well as an economic stability curriculum that focuses on budgets, child support and job retention and growth.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Adrian Wilson came to A Father's Place (AFP) at the suggestion of a friend—a graduate of AFP. He told Adrian about the extensive assistance he had received. Adrian came to us in a very broken state. He wanted to be a better father and a better man and husband. He wanted to become a Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) technician, so AFP introduced him to the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act and he enrolled in the HVAC program at Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC}. At the end of his first year, he landed a job with Coastal Air and Refrigeration. After 3 years of employment, he moved into the position of Lead Installer. His salary now reflects the trust Coastal Air and Refrigeration has in him. He is now a happy husband and proud father of four ranging from ages 3-19. His marriage makes him smile when he talks about how it used to be. He says, “One of the best moves I ever made was to go to AFP. I still apply my skills. It is not just a program. It is a lifelong thing."
