Program Overview
Books for Keeps (BFK) started in 2009 giving books to 80 children in Athens, GA and has grown to a non-profit giving 108,000 books annually to combat reading summer slide. Beginning in 2021, BFK has formalized their Family Literacy Program to address intergenerational literacy and the barriers that hamper multi-generational success.
The Family Literacy Program supports families in using reading, writing, listening, and speaking to guide their children and selves in realizing and accomplishing their self-defined goals.
This program exists to accomplish the following goals:
To raise awareness of the benefits of reading in the home;
To nurture love of reading among children* community members *of all ability levels;
To infuse more caregiver confidence and capacity into this practice* supporting family literacy practices;
To support caregivers and children in defining personal goals and how literacy is involved.
Services are provided at specific event/class addresses.
We primarily serve families in Clarke and surrounding counties of Georgia. We realize many people interact with children and so "family" is not defined as nuclear or those living the same residence; family can be those adults interacting with children to improve literacy practices, as well as working on one's own adult literacy.
