Program Overview

In partnership with the City of Muskegon Heights, Read Muskegon opened our Family Literacy Center at 26 East Broadway in the spring of 2017. The center will act as a countywide hub for literacy with a focus on providing programming for low-literacy adults and their 0-5 year olds. This storefront building is situated in the heart of the community, adjacent to the Farmer's Market, African American History Museum, town offices, police department, bus station, Rowan Park, DHHS and Hackley Community Care. Our programming includes:

1) Weekly 1-1 tutoring for parents;

2) Weekly small group classes focused on improving functional literacy while also providing instruction on how to engage in early literacy development with their children;

3) Bi-weekly literacy based Play & Learn groups;

4) Literacy based ABC's of Cooking, a six week parent/child healthy cooking workshop offered 2-4 times per year;

5) Community-based Family Literacy activities and book distribution at the Heights Farmer's Market, Rowan Park family movie nights, and other community events;

6) Weekly drop-in Literacy Lab tutoring for parents and high school students;

7) Family Reading Corner open 5 days a week during office hours for parents and young children;

8) English as a Second Language small group class focused on job readiness and developing early literacy in children.
