Program Overview

Mid-Cumberland Community Action Agency provides a variety of literacy services to low-income families & individuals through Family Development Services, offered through Case Management & the Head Start program (HS). These programs utilize a Whole Family Approach, meaning literacy is routinely addressed. In PY23, MCCAA served a total 8710 households, (19058 individuals). Of the 8716 individuals over the age of 25, 1869, or 21.4% did not possess a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma. Further, 448 of those individuals had achieved less than an 8th grade education. MCCAA's 2023 Community Needs Assessment indicates that 14.9% of the adults in the agency's service area are at or below level 1 for literacy which means these individuals are at risk for being able to understand printed text. MCCAA provides the funding & support needed by individuals to be able to improve literacy. Through HS, MCCAA provides literacy services to over 500 children & families annually. Literacy services vary from direct services
to the children enrolled in the program to promoting family literacy via a variety of campaigns and activities designed to increase family literacy.
