The English Skills Learning Center's envisions a community where all voices are celebrated. Speaking and understanding English is essential to success in America. Newly arrived immigrants and refugees often live and work with others using the same language, having few opportunities to speak with native English speakers in their daily lives. They face barriers with everyday issues and traditional ESL programs frequently do not meet the needs of refugee and immigrant parents. The English Skills Learning Center is unique in offering a realistic alternative, accommodating our students' individual circumstances. Trained and mentored volunteers provide instruction at times and in locations which are free and accessible to our students. With improved English language skills, we believe that families are stronger, better integrated into our community, and parents can make significant progress in supporting their children in school.
