Program Overview

In Arlington, VA, Kitchen of Purpose provides job training and job placement in Spanish and English for work in restaurants, hotels, and other food businesses. The English classes Kitchen of Purpose provides are important because they help students be successful in their new jobs.

Our English Classes happen during training. Students meet with a teacher in small groups, so the teacher can provide instruction that meets the needs of the students. Students especially learn the vocabulary they will need for their new jobs.

Students from all over DC, Maryland, and Virginia who meet the income requirements can join our programs to learn:
  • Culinary Arts to become cooks
  • Baking to become bakers
  • Front of House to learn bartending, coffee drinks preparation, and customer service
After our students train, Kitchen of Purpose places students in jobs where they earn an average of $17/hr. One of the reasons our program works so well is that we provide more than training. English classes, social services, and job readiness help get students ready to be successful at work.

Kitchen of Purpose is located at 918 S. Lincoln Street Suite #2 in Arlington. Please visit www.kitchenofpurpose.org for an application or to learn more.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Fanny, a refugee from Peru, trained with Kitchen of Purpose in our Culinary Training Program.

Before joining the program, Fanny juggled two jobs, but Fanny wanted more for herself and her family, so she enrolled in Kitchen of Purpose's Culinary Training. While Fanny gained culinary skills, her English improved in Kitchen of Purpose's English classes. Expressing gratitude, Fanny said, "I am thankful to [my teacher] at Kitchen of Purpose! Her patience for us is remarkable." Fanny has since completed our Baking Training Program and now plans to open her own small business.
