Program Overview
The Brook ELL Program helps adults who speak (or wish to speak) English as a second language learn and improve their English skills. Classes are free and open to anyone 18 and older who wants to gain confidence in speaking, reading, and writing English. We offer classes tailored to multiple skill levels, so students can be placed in an appropriate learning setting.
Classes meet twice weekly for two hours, and students also complete homework to reinforce their learning. Classes are in session 10 months out of the year. Lessons focus on everyday skills like talking to teachers, doctors, and employers. The program also offers computer literacy, financial education, and cultural lessons to help students in daily life.
Volunteers and community members are welcome to get involved by helping with conversation practice, tutoring, or program support.

“I am totally grateful to everyone involved with this course. Thank you all for your time and patience overall. We have learned how to ask for help... make appointments... greet people. We have also learned how to simply not stay quiet. For this, I give you thanks for all of the little and big things I have learned. I can't thank you enough. I say it from the heart."
“I am happy to be part of this program. I have learned so much during these months... I feel more confident to speak the language and not be afraid in speaking English. I feel I can communicate with people at work and around me. I hope we can continue with classes..."
“... Everything I have learned has helped me - from something as simple as answering a greeting to something as important as understanding instructions at work, making an appointment with the doctor, and being able to talk to him about my symptoms when I am sick... I sincerely want to thank you for your willingness and commitment [to the students] of this program."
“I am very grateful... I have improved my grammar, listening, and have been losing the fear of speaking. As a goal I set myself to understand and speak [English] fluently enough to be able to travel and see new places in this beautiful country. Travel without fear that not understanding or speaking it might cause me problems."
“...It's even helping me with my son who speaks more English than Spanish...I am communicating with him more and understanding more in my work. Not speaking the language limits us from not getting better jobs because we don't understand...from not being informed...from not participating in the community..."
