Program Overview

Since 1994, English In Action has been dedicated to helping adult immigrants in western Colorado's Roaring Fork Valley learn English and become more involved in our community. We connect adult students with trained volunteer tutors for one-on-one and small group English classes. We also provide personalized bilingual digital literacy training for our language learners. Our tutoring programs are designed to help our students learn English and gain access to technology, but they also create an opportunity for students and tutors to develop strong cross-cultural relationships. We believe these friendships serve to strengthen our whole community.

We sponsor events and activities throughout the year, often in partnership with other local non-profit organizations, that provide our participants opportunities to engage in our community in new ways, build leadership capacity, and foster cross-cultural exchange.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Robert and Carlos were matched in our Individual Tutoring program in 2016. Robert, a Marine veteran who serves as treasurer on English In Action's Board of Directors, wanted to deepen his experience in our programs by becoming a tutor. Carlos, who moved to El Jebel in 2000 from El Salvador, wanted to improve his English so that he could pursue his education and become a volunteer firefighter. Through his own dedication and with Robert's support, Carlos now feels more confident engaging in the community and became a volunteer fireman in Basalt in 2017. Over the last six years, their relationship has evolved from that of a teacher and a student to a close friendship. The two men meet for breakfast monthly and can be seen at local fishing holes together. Next up: Carlos plans to prep for his U.S. citizenship!
