Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Claudia moved to Philadelphia in 2019 from the Dominican Republic. In her home country, she had earned a degree to become a dentist. When she arrived in the United States, she found it very hard to start her career again.

One day, while walking in her neighborhood, Claudia saw a flyer for our English classes. She later said that finding that flyer “changed my life." Claudia joined our English program and soon met our Director of Program, Jillian. “Jillian took my hand and said, 'I am going to help you,'" Claudia shared.

Jillian started a new GED program inspired by Claudia's determination. After months of studying, Claudia decided to take all four of her GED exams in one day at Temple University—a total of seven hours of testing! She passed every exam and, in June 2022, became the Foundation's first GED graduate.

Because of Claudia's success, seven more students joined the program. Today, Claudia is studying for her national dental board exams and hopes to soon work again as a dentist here in the United States.
