Program Overview

In our English class, we focus on learning words and phrases that you use every day. We practice talking about different situations like shopping, going to the doctor, asking for directions, or making an appointment. An American teacher will help you practice, and this will make you feel more confident when speaking English.

We also help many people become U.S. citizens. Along with learning English, we give students lots of materials to study and encourage them to work together. Our volunteers even have special classes for individuals who need extra help.

Our volunteers have a great opportunity to help others in the community. They work with English learners to help them become a part of their new society and pass the citizenship test. It's a wonderful way to make our community stronger and better!

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

This is the story of one of our learners, Ms. Ha. She shared her learning journey with us in spoken English, a transcript from her recording is provided below:

"Hi everyone, I am Ha. I am 57 years old. I left Vietnam and came to America to live with my daughter 2 years ago. I traveled to America 2 times and had a lot of fun, but to live here, I was really shocked. The difficulties I encountered were language, weather, cuisine, habits, etc. The biggest barrier is language. In Vietnam I studied French. I just learned English when I decided to come here my daughter. I understood a few words, but when a person with an accent speaks, I didn't understand anything. I had to ask my daughter for help. My friends introduced me to VAS (Vietnamese American Services). I began to study with native teachers and Vietnamese teachers. They are the greatest. I became more confident day by day. I passed the driver's license exam without a translator, I can go to the supermarket alone, pay money and return items I don't like, I can order food from restaurants, I can make appointments with my doctors. I talk with my neighbors and sometimes we walk together on the weekends. I will improve in English communication, I plan to continue taking English classes. It will be harder for me to learn English because I am older, but it will never be too late to learn."
