Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Sonia Macias moved to Florida in early 2015. Unfortunately, during this time, she couldn't work because of her son Alejandro's medical situation. So, with the sparse free time she did have, she began to take English as a Second Language (ESL) and Vocational Training classes at El Sol to better support herself and her struggling child.

This past year, she was the only woman to enroll in the National Center for Construction Education and Research Bridge course. After completing this class and the more advanced follow-up class, she enrolled in their Plumbing course where she is now receiving hands-on training in how to install, maintain, and repair many different types of plumbing systems in various buildings. Given that all of their courses are in English, this would not have been possible without the ESL classes she took.
Sonia is an outstanding woman who has learned to juggle her work, school, and family life. Her inspiring story is a shining example of how hard our students work in order to provide a brighter future for their loved ones. All she needed was a little bit of help to get started.
