Program Overview

At Education Matters, we recognize that the only way to advance on a personal and professional level is to offer opportunities for adults to re-engage in education. Founded by Lower Price Hill parents and grandparents in 1971 as a way to address the neighborhood's dropout rate, Education Matters has grown from a GED tutoring site to a multi-faceted adult educational resource.

Our Model
Across our program areas, Education Matters believes that every individual deserves the opportunity to meet their educational and career goals. To remove barriers that prevent students from re-engaging, Education Matters offers onsite childcare, transportation assistance in the form of bus tokens, and holistic services, such as housing and food assistance through a partnership with Community Matters. While other organizations offer GED preparation assistance or English classes, no other organization offers the flexibility, individualized instruction, or the holistic services that Education Matters offers to realize the unique potential of each person.

Education Forward: College and Career Readiness
The Education Forward program at Education Matters works with adults in the Greater Cincinnati community to gain the skills necessary to acquire a GED and enter college. Education Forward accomplishes this by providing a welcoming, encouraging environment in which students set their own path toward success. As students enter the program, they state their educational and career goals, as well as the challenges that may stand in the way to success.

Each student completes a college or career plan with our mentors, who connect them to the most appropriate, accredited college or training program. Our instructors provide tutoring for college placement and entrance exams, relieving the burden of costly, remedial classes when entering college. Our team continues to support students throughout college to ensure they have the best opportunity to earn a degree.

Mission Statement

Education Matters exists to inspire learning and strengthen our community by removing barriers to education.

Hours of operation: Monday-Thursday, 9am-4pm

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

In 2013, Christine enrolled in the Education Forward program. Motivated by her children, especially her son who was graduating high school that fall, Christine made the commitment to complete her GED. In just a few months, she became a graduate herself!

Christine's story with Education Matters didn't end there. While she has always worked in the healthcare field in some capacity, her passion is to become a Registered Nurse. Christine is enrolled at Cincinnati State pursuing a nursing degree. With the ongoing support of our Education Forward instructors and her hard work, she is just two semesters away from obtaining that degree. Christine also mentors others by serving as a work study student within Education Forward.

Program’s Demographics/Metrics

For the 2018-19 school year, we served 233 students within the Education Forward program. The majority of our students (65%) are female. Historically, our students have come from the generationally-Appalachian Lower Price Hill neighborhood, in which we operate. Over the past ten years, we have increased our reach with students accessing our programs from across the Cincinnati region. Our services are open to all individuals and roughly 90% of our students live below the poverty line.
