Program Overview

ESLC is a Learner-Centered Program for Adults who wish to improve reading skills, transition to GED, learn or improve English speaking skills, and/or obtain citizenship.

The Eastern Shore Literacy Council provides one-on-one or small group tutoring to adults who want to raise their reading and writing levels utilizing trained volunteer tutors. Tutoring is also provided to those who come from other countries and want to improve their ability to speak, read, and write English. ESLC also offers a Citizenship Study Group to qualified participants.

Direct services are provided through ESLC staff and volunteers. ESLC is funded through the generous donations of individuals, businesses & organizations on the Eastern Shore as well as through grants from the VA Literacy Foundation, National Book Fund, VADOE, and United Way of the Eastern Shore.

As a clearinghouse, we share information about adult education with parents, teachers, and others.

We offer services to employers and their employees.

We work with programs and businesses which share our aim of helping adults meet their learning goals.

We work together to bridge cultural gaps.

ESLC uses trained volunteers to tutor our clients. Neither ESLC staff nor its Board of Directors make any claim as to progress or expertise in teaching. We are simply "neighbors helping neighbors" to the best of our ability using research-based resources.
