Program Overview

Eastern Iowa Community Colleges provide broad access to programs for adults to advance their skills in reading, math, writing and English. These programs include Adult Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency (HSE) and English Language Acquisition (ESA). Classes are offered at eight locations strategically located throughout the service area.

ABE classes develop reading, writing, speaking and math skills. Programming is designed to help anyone 17 years of age or older not enrolled in high school to take the steps necessary toward passing the High School Equivalency Test and beyond. (Note: Iowa is a HiSET state. The HiSET exam is similar in nature and provides the same credential as the GED test, which is offered in other states. Iowa leads all HiSET states in the country with a 97% success rate.)

HSE Students will study:

Language Arts – Reading
Language Arts – Writing
Mathematics
Science
Social Studies

ELA classes engage students in multi-level skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening the English language. Courses are contextual in nature, combing skill development with a comprehensive understanding of workplace knowledge and skills and an understanding of United States civics. English Language Learners (ELLs) may choose to focus on skill development for ease in transitioning into the community and the workforce or may elect to continue their studies toward an HSE or postsecondary instruction, depending upon their individual needs.
