Program Overview

On Monday June 5th

the first Early Literacy Parent Workshop was held. We had 25 families participate. Many of those families brought their children because both childcare and dinner was provided. The event began with participants eating dinner and interacting with each other. The event began with a brief presentation regarding the value of early literacy, the activities/learning exercises that were being taught, and sharing the content of the literacy packet.

The different stations were run by literacy specialists from the Whitefish learning community. Parents rotated through the stations and learning different literacy development strategies. Parents were also exposed to the anchor literacy texts; interactive summer reading journal and literacy engagement text.

We have about 20 children participate in the literacy activity expo. Six independent high school student volunteered their time to help run the stations and provide childcare. The students received training from Amy Muhlfeld regarding different literacy
methods. The high school students prepared for the event by working with 2nd grade students at Muldown.

The Early Literacy Parent Workshop was supported and hosted at the Whitefish Public Library. Their education coordinator worked alongside Amy and helped facilitate one of the activity areas. A key outcome of this event was building capacity for community-based educational programming for both Whitefish Public Library and Whitefish School District. Ongoing supports for parents over the course of the summer will occur with regular text messages that provide both reminders and literacy strategies.
