Program Overview

The Detroit Native Sun Newspaper is giving students the gift of words and a voice to speak out. We foster a love for reading and writing in a fun creative way. Our student journalism training program teaches up to 30 children how to effectively interview, research, and write newsworthy articles. Students will interview community leaders, entrepreneurs, banking employees, politicians, and religious leaders to write stories on homelessness, financial literacy, sports, and community events and tell how each affects today's youth. They will also identify problems and offer potential solutions.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Two newspapers have been published. Students' love for writing grew within three months. I've watched many of them advance from writing one-paragraph articles with three to four sentences to writing 300-plus articles containing quotes from multiple people and statistics. Their faces lit up when they first saw their pictures, bylines, and articles published in an actual newspaper. They were praised by the administrators, and their newspaper was prominently displayed in the main office's newspaper for all to see. Others have joined the club following the release of the first newspaper.
