Program Overview
To
prepare our DHHS clients for the job market, we must first impart skills in
math, reading, and writing (using English as a Second Language method), to
enhance their abilities to secure employment and/or to enroll in college or
vocational training. As with our hearing
job seekers, we efficiently teach our DHHS clients to identify the right job opportunities,
to market themselves, and then to stay employed and advance in their
career. Our DHHS clientele is 83.5%
minority including 49.5% African-American, 28% Hispanic, 6% Asian/Pacific
Islanders, 3.5% Other, and the Caucasian population is 13%. Some of our clients grew up in countries
where English is not spoken and Sign Languages other than ASL are used – we
must help overcome a double language barrier.

Last year we help place 1,030
clients into employment Mr. Segovia, our
client in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Program, has felt the impact of these services
first-hand. Mr. Segovia is profoundly
deaf and regularly attends classes here at CRR.
He was also faced with challenges attributed to previous convictions
resulting in not being selected after attending interviews. Prior to coming to CRR he had been
relentlessly pursuing Employment leads and struggling to overcome barriers to a
successful life after being discharged from previous jobs. CRR helped him get a job at Sign Shares, Inc.
and Mr. Segovia was hired as a "Community Advocate".
