Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Before discovering Crossroads Conversation School, I couldn't speak English. I knew only a few basic sentences: “Hello, my name is Roj. I'm from Turkiye. Thank you." That was it. I also felt very shy about speaking. I tried to study English at home, but I didn't have an opportunity to practice and improve my skills. I didn't have any friends and, as a very social person back home, this was incredibly hard for me. I spent two and a half months like this, feeling quite alone.

After my first summer in Corvallis, my husband looked for an English course for me and found Crossroads Conversation School. I was so excited to start. When I arrived, it quickly became a place where I could improve my English while meeting wonderful people who were supportive and encouraging. I saw others who, like me, were struggling to speak English. I began in the beginner class with my wonderful teachers. Every time I tried to speak or say something, they encouraged and supported me very patiently.

My classmates were also amazing. Every week, we would meet at a coffee shop or someone's home, bring traditional foods, and talk about our cultures. My friends helped me improve my English, and I will never forget their names.

Over time, I had the opportunity to participate in all the in-person classes—beginner, intermediate, advanced, and the online Zoom class!

Through my journey at Crossroads, I truly found a sense of belonging, a home in a foreign place, where I could grow, connect, and be myself. Crossroads has not only helped me grow more confident in speaking English but has also given me a sense of community in Corvallis. I feel so lucky to be part of this organization, where I can share my culture, learn from others, and feel at home in this new environment.
