Program Overview

The Kids Soar (formerly Community Outreach Program) Literacy Initiative serves 40 early elementary students and about 50-60 parents/siblings of students each week. After school and in the summer our dedicated staff provides a structured learning environment where kids do homework and participate in research based literacy achievement curriculum. We also have special enrichment activities, clothing closet, library time, field trips, snack, dinner, and family night once a week. Parents attend weekly classes.

Mission Statement

The Community Outreach Program is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization improving the quality of life of inner city children living in poverty in the city of Roanoke, Virginia by providing after school and evening literacy training, tutoring and dinner, school supplies and programs such as Clothing Closet, Learn About Books Library, Christmas Angels and Camp. Programming includes services for parents and youth.

Our vision is a community that fosters faithand learning opportunities by building relationships across economic boundaries to create active, successful citizens. Our mission: The Community Outreach Program strives to improve the quality of life of children and their families living in poverty and in the inner city by providing a safe and nurturing environment where all God's children are mentored academically, spiritually,emotionally, and physically.

Hours of operation: After school during school year and evenings, and summer.

Cost info: All students are provided full scholarships, so there are no charges to families.

Program’s Demographics/Metrics

First through third grade children referred by Roanoke schools for reading assistance. Weekly classes for parents, including English language assistance.
