Program Overview

Community Literacy Lab (CLL) is a nonprofit microschool and community learning organization based in Sumter, South Carolina, dedicated to strengthening literacy, numeracy, and lifelong learning for children, families, and educators. Founded in 2019, CLL provides affordable, small-group instruction grounded in evidence-based practices, including structured literacy, family literacy, and learning-difference-informed support.

Through its microschool, after-school enrichment, tutoring, family learning programs, and community partnerships, Community Literacy Lab serves learners of all abilities while prioritizing access, flexibility, and inclusion. The organization reinvests all resources into programming, scholarships, and community outreach, including the annual donation of approximately 1,000 books to local families. CLL works collaboratively with schools, libraries, homeschool communities, and civic organizations to advance literacy as a foundation for educational success and community empowerment.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Dawn E.

The Literacy Lab is such a wonderful and affordable resource, especially for homeschooling families. I am homeschooling my children, and because of that, my children are not eligible for speech therapy or any group activities through my district in my state. One of my children is dyslexic and has had difficulty reading. When he first started at the Literacy Lab, he was a bit behind. After taking classes with Miss Penny, his reading abilities improved tremendously. He is now reading at his grade level, if not a bit above it! Thank you, Miss Penny. The Literacy Lab is such a blessing.

Terry S.
My son loves reading now thanks to Community Literacy Lab. He is now volunteering to read out loud at school.
